What to have ready
Two of these matter far more than the rest: the animal’s age, and whether anything has happened yet.
- Species, breed or type, and age.
- Microchip and registration status.
- Vaccination record, and whether the animal is neutered.
- For a cat, whether it goes outdoors.
- Anything already diagnosed, treated or investigated.
- Whether you want veterinary cover, civil liability, or both.
- For a dog, any previous incident involving a person or another animal.
Why the age and the history decide the outcome
These products work on what has not happened yet, so the quote stage is where the value is set.
Anything the animal already has, or is already showing signs of, is treated as pre-existing and sits outside the cover. That is not a hard rule to work around; it is the basis on which the product exists. The practical consequence is that the best day to ask for a quote is the day you take the animal on.
Age matters twice. Premiums rise with it, and insurers commonly set an upper age beyond which they will not write new business at all. A policy already running is easier to keep than a new one is to start.
A rescue animal with no known history is insurable. Send whatever the shelter documented and whatever your vet has recorded — an estimated age, the microchip, the vaccination status — because that becomes the baseline against which later claims are judged.
Asking for a quote commits you to nothing. We do not need payment details to prepare one, and nothing is arranged until you say so.
