Before you start
What to have ready
Dental cover is easy to quote and easy to misunderstand, so it helps to know what you actually want from it.
- Ages of everyone to be covered.
- The province, and where you would realistically travel to for treatment.
- Whether you want a standalone dental policy or dental added to health cover.
- Any treatment you already know you need, or have been told you will need.
- Whether children are included.
- Any existing dental or health policy, and when it renews.
What a quote can and cannot tell you
A dental premium is only half the answer, and the other half is a document rather than a number.
Two documents decide whether a dental policy suits you, and only one of them is the premium. The other is the insurer’s price list — the baremo — which sets what you pay for treatments that are not included outright. A premium buys you access at those prices; it does not make treatment free of charge. Ask to see the list before deciding, and treat a policy whose list you cannot see as an unanswered question.
If you already know you need something — a crown, an implant, orthodontic work — say so at the quote stage. Waiting periods commonly apply to the larger treatments, and knowing where they fall changes whether a policy is worth taking now or is simply a bill deferred.
For a family, ask how children are treated. Paediatric dentistry and the public provision available to children both affect whether the family option earns its cost.
Asking for a quote commits you to nothing. We do not need payment details to prepare one, and nothing is arranged until you say so.
